UConn Extends Historic Winning Streak with Dominant Victory as UCLA Completes Perfect Big Ten Ru
According to official reports sent from the Big East Conference and NCAA, the University of Connecticut (UConn) women’s basketball team completed its 2025-26 regular season undefeated on March 1, defeating St. John’s 85-49 in Madison Square Garden, New York City.
The Huskies’ winning streak also extended their NCAA Division I winning streak to 47 games, marking the fifth-longest in women’s college basketball history. UConn played before 9,612 fans in the first standalone women’s college basketball game at Madison Square Garden, a report from Madison Square Garden Entertainment said.
The Huskies took control early, scoring 24-9 against St. John’s in the first quarter, shooting 57 percent from the field and forcing 22 turnovers, according to the official box score the Big East released. The game featured six players who scored nine or more points, including national player of the year candidates Sarah Strong with 18 points and Azzi Fudd who contributed 15 points. The head coach, Geno Auriemma, emphasized his pride in their resiliency.

“When you’re able to go through 31 games and win them all, that is something to be proud of,” he said in the postgame press conference, based off the Big East official release. Despite their solid season, Auriemma said greater challenges were ahead. “It’s going to be a whole different challenge without Paige [Bueckers] at the NCAA tournament, but we have a fantastic group, we are going to compete at the tournament,” he said. Last season’s star and No. 1 pick in the 2026 WNBA draft, Bueckers graduated before that campaign.
UConn’s most prominent season included a +37.8 scoring margin per game, the third-highest in NCAA Division I women’s basketball history, lagging behind just two other UConn teams in history. The Huskies’ elite performance is reflected in the NCAA’s official statistics database, which assists with their record streak.
The program’s track record is one of five of the top six winning streaks in Division I women’s basketball. Sarah Strong followed up on her coach’s assertion, saying, “Coach said he was proud of us but we have to stay focused and be prepared for the Big East tournament,” when interviewed for this matter in a locker room on the Huskies’ verified social media channels.
The Huskies received a first-round bye in the Big East tournament in 2026. UConn will compete against the Georgetown or Butler winner in the quarterfinals on Saturday at 4 PM ET, with coverage on Peacock, according to the Big East’s official schedule.
Meanwhile, the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) women’s basketball team went an undefeated 18-0 in Pac-12 conference play by defeating USC 73-50 on the day, according to the Pac-12 Conference’s official game summary. At No. 2 nationally, UCLA already has a 28-1 record as such.
The Bruins will compete in the Pac-12 tournament next weekend in Indianapolis as they pursue their first outright conference title since the 1998-99 season. The UCLA graduate student Charlisse Leger-Walker led UCLA with 20 points, on line for her season-long record and said the success of the team came from “teamwork and selflessness” following the game, while appearing at the postgame press conference posted on UCLA Athletics’ official website.
Gabriela Jaquez, a senior, made 14 points with eight rebounds; she said that “we take it one game at a time” was her team methodology in rallying around each other and keeping focused. UCLA beat USC 47-22 and carried the second half, slowly tightening the lead. The Bruins are looking for their first national title since 1978, per NCAA statistics.
