Aryna Sabalenka Defeats Naomi Osaka To Reach Indian Wells Quarter-Finals
World No.1 Overpowers Former Champion In Straight Sets To Continue Title Push At The BNP Paribas Open
World number one Aryna Sabalenka advanced to the quarter-finals of the BNP Paribas Open after defeating Naomi Osaka 6–2, 6–4 in the fourth round on 10 March 2026 at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. The Belarusian secured the straight-sets victory in about 80 minutes, using powerful baseline play and strong serving to control the match, according to reporting from BBC Sport and Reuters.
The contest marked the first meeting between Sabalenka and Osaka since the 2018 US Open, when Osaka defeated Sabalenka during her run to her first Grand Slam title. Both players have since become major champions, with Osaka winning four Grand Slam singles titles and Sabalenka claiming three.
Sabalenka, the top seed and last year’s runner-up at Indian Wells, quickly imposed her aggressive game after Osaka opened the match with a confident service hold. Sabalenka broke serve for a 2–1 lead and began dictating rallies with a series of powerful backhands.

The Belarusian extended her advantage to 5–2 before closing the opening set with an ace. Official match statistics published by the Women’s Tennis Association showed Sabalenka consistently pressured Osaka’s serve during the set with aggressive returns.
Both players held serve early in the second set before Sabalenka produced the decisive break at 4–2. She maintained control through the remainder of the match to complete the victory without dropping a set in the tournament so far.
“I’m pretty happy for the result today,” Sabalenka said in her on-court interview, according to Reuters. She added that Osaka was “coming back playing great tennis”.
Sabalenka also credited the effectiveness of her serve and returning game. “My serve worked well,” she said, according to BBC Sport, adding that she was satisfied with the pressure she applied during the match.
The victory levelled the head-to-head record between the two players at 1–1. Osaka had previously won their only meeting at the 2018 US Open in New York.
Osaka, the tournament’s 16th seed and a former world number one, returned to full-time competition in 2024 following a 14-month break from the WTA Tour after the birth of her daughter, Shai, in July 2023. Despite the loss, she showed early signs of form with a strong opening service game before Sabalenka seized control.
The BNP Paribas Open, a WTA 1000 event often described as the “fifth Grand Slam”, is one of the most prestigious tournaments on the women’s tennis calendar outside the four majors.
Sabalenka will next face either Canada’s Victoria Mboko or American Amanda Anisimova in the quarter-finals as she continues her pursuit of a first Indian Wells title.

The quarter-final clash will determine whether Sabalenka moves closer to capturing her maiden Indian Wells crown after finishing runner-up in the 2025 edition of the tournament.
