Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina Set for Third Final Meeting at Indian Wells

World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka and No. 3 Elena Rybakina set for a high-stakes rematch at Indian Wells after semi-final victories over Linda Noskova and Elina Svitolina, continuing their 2026 rivalry on the WTA Tour.

World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka will face No. 3 Elena Rybakina in the BNP Paribas Open final at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden on Sunday, following straight-sets victories in their respective semi-finals on Friday. Sabalenka defeated Czech 14th seed Linda Noskova 6-3, 6-4, while Rybakina overcame Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina 7-5, 6-4 in California, setting up a high-stakes rematch of their recent 2026 Australian Open and 2023 Indian Wells finals.

According to BBC Sport, this final will mark Sabalenka’s 14th WTA 1000 final and her third at Indian Wells in four years. Despite reaching previous finals in 2023 and 2025, Sabalenka has yet to lift the trophy at the California event. Rybakina, who won the Indian Wells title in 2023, has won the last two finals meetings against Sabalenka, including the Australian Open earlier this year, highlighting the competitive edge she brings to the upcoming clash.

Sabalenka’s semi-final performance demonstrated her power and precision, according to WTA Match Reports. She broke Noskova early to lead 3-1, capitalising on a series of double faults and errors from the Czech. Sabalenka eventually secured the first set 6-3 and maintained momentum in the second, closing out the match 6-4.

The Belarusian posted 37 winners and 11 aces, both career-high numbers in a single match this season, reflecting her dominant control from baseline and serve. Sabalenka’s strategy focused on pushing Noskova wide and targeting the corners, preventing the Czech from establishing rhythm. Her serve was particularly effective, winning a majority of points on her first serve and converting break points efficiently.

Commenting after the match, Sabalenka told TNT Sports: “I’m so done with losing these big finals. I just want to focus and get the trophy.” She also stated to WTA that she would approach Sunday’s final with complete commitment: “If I make it to the final, I’ll go out there and do everything I can and everything I cannot to get that trophy.”

Sabalenka’s victories at Indian Wells this year continue a strong season, with 16 wins in her first 17 matches, including victories over top players like Naomi Osaka and Victoria Mboko. She has reached three consecutive finals across the Sunshine Double (Indian Wells and Miami), joining the likes of Monica Seles and Steffi Graf in tour-level history.

Rybakina has maintained her own high level, securing 12 consecutive wins over Top 10 opponents, a streak that began at the 2025 Ningbo Open. The WTA notes that only Venus Williams, Serena Williams, Justine Henin, and Iga Swiatek have achieved similar top-10 winning runs since 2000, underscoring her exceptional form.

In her semi-final, Rybakina withstood early pressure from Svitolina, who initially led 2-0. The Kazakh player fought back with forehand winners and precise service games, eventually taking the first set 7-5. In the second set, she raced to a 5-1 lead but had to survive match points before closing out 6-4. The win not only sent her into the final but also secures her upcoming rise to world No. 2 in the WTA rankings, as confirmed by official WTA releases.

Rybakina commented on her preparations for the final: “We know each other’s games very well. It’s going to be a difficult match where we both are going to try to serve well, that’s for sure, put pressure, and…we will see what’s going to happen” (TNT Sports).

Rivalry and Historical Context

The final continues a notable rivalry in women’s tennis, with Rybakina holding a winning edge in their recent finals meetings. Since August 2025, the two have contested three championship matches, with Rybakina victorious at the 2025 WTA Finals and 2026 Australian Open, while Sabalenka seeks to break through for her first Indian Wells title.

Both players are among the top three in the WTA rankings, adding high stakes to the encounter. The match also has historical significance for Sabalenka, who has previously reached the Indian Wells final in 2023 (lost to Rybakina) and 2025 (lost to Mirra Andreeva, according to Sky Sports), demonstrating her persistence in chasing a long-sought title.

What’s Next

Sunday’s final will be streamed live across multiple platforms, including Sky Sports Tennis and NOW, allowing global audiences to witness the third showdown between these WTA top players. Both Sabalenka and Rybakina have emphasised their intent to serve effectively and apply pressure, promising a match that could impact rankings and momentum heading into the Miami Open.

The BNP Paribas Open continues to be a key fixture in the WTA 1000 calendar, with the women’s final highlighting a season-defining rivalry.
