Aryna Sabalenka And Naomi Osaka Lead Indian Wells 2026 Storylines As Third Round Begins

Naomi Osaka advances at Indian Wells while Aryna Sabalenka continues her title pursuit, with a potential fourth-round clash between the two stars emerging in the draw.

Aryna Sabalenka and Naomi Osaka headlined the third round of the BNP Paribas Open at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in California, where leading contenders competed for places in the last 16 of the WTA 1000 event. Sabalenka began her campaign seeking a first Indian Wells title, while Osaka returned to form following injury setbacks earlier in the season.

The Belarusian top seed opened her tournament with a straight-sets win over Japanese qualifier Himeno Sakatsume, winning 6-4, 6-2 to progress to the third round, according to a match report by Reuters. Sabalenka reached the final of the tournament in 2025 but lost to Mirra Andreeva, the defending champion.

Indian Wells, often described by organisers as the “fifth Grand Slam”, is one of the most prestigious tournaments outside the four majors. The combined ATP-WTA event draws the world’s leading players and forms a key part of the early-season North American hard-court swing.

Osaka also progressed to the third round after defeating Victoria Jiménez Kasintseva in straight sets. According to the official Women’s Tennis Association match report, the four-time Grand Slam champion won 7-5, 6-2 in one hour and 28 minutes.

The victory marked an important step for Osaka following her withdrawal from the Australian Open earlier this year due to injury. Speaking after the match, Osaka acknowledged the frustration of recurring physical issues.

“Every year I go through that specific abdominal injury,” Osaka said, according to The Tennis Gazette.

The Japanese player added that returning to competition in California had helped rebuild her confidence as she attempts to regain consistency on the tour.

Osaka’s next opponent in the third round was Colombian Camila Osorio, with the draw indicating a possible round-of-16 meeting against Sabalenka if both players advance.

Elsewhere in the draw, American Coco Gauff moved into the third round after defeating Kamilla Rakhimova in straight sets. Match statistics published on the official BNP Paribas Open website showed Gauff recorded 10 double faults but maintained control of the match to progress.

Gauff was scheduled to face Filipino rising star Alexandra Eala, whom she previously beat earlier this season at the Dubai Tennis Championships.

Britain’s Emma Raducanu also advanced after defeating Anastasia Zakharova in straight sets. Raducanu next met American Amanda Anisimova, who has climbed back into the world’s top rankings following a strong return to the tour.

Other third-round matches included Jasmine Paolini against Ajla Tomljanovic, while Canadian rising player Victoria Mboko faced Anna Kalinskaya. Czech teenager Linda Noskova met Romanian veteran Sorana Cîrstea, and Denmark’s Clara Tauson played Australia’s Talia Gibson.

The tournament continues through the week as players compete for a place in the final stages of the WTA 1000 event. Full match schedules and results are available on the official tournament website.

Indian Wells forms the opening half of the annual “Sunshine Double”, with the Miami Open scheduled to follow later this month on the WTA calendar.
