Brazil’s Azevedo and Colombia’s Linares Headline Women’s Success at South American Indoor Championships
Record-Breaking Performances Highlight Women’s Sprint, Jump and Hurdles Success in Cochabamba
Brazilian sprinter Ana Carolina Azevedo and Colombian long jumper Natalia Linares led a wave of standout women’s performances at the 2026 South American Indoor Championships in Athletics, held on 28 February–1 March 2026 at the Estadio Municipal in Cochabamba. The competition drew athletes from across the continent and delivered multiple record‑breaking results on the final day of the meet.
Azevedo won the women’s 60 metres in 7.09 seconds, setting a new championship best and improving on the previous South American indoor mark, according to World Athletics and her athlete profile. She also posted a 7.05 personal best outdoors earlier in 2026, which likewise stands as a South American record.
Linares dominated the women’s long jump, clearing 6.73 metres to establish a championship record and national indoor best for Colombia. That mark anchored her gold medal performance after a series of consistent leaps in Cochabamba.

Colombian hurdler María Fernanda Murillo captured the 60m hurdles title, clocking 8.01 seconds and setting a new championships standard in that event. Chilean thrower Ivana Gallardo delivered a winning shot put performance of 18.02 metres, another championship record and new national indoor high, the official report shows.
Brazilian Women Excel Across Events
Brazilian women contributed strongly to their nation’s overall success, which saw the host country claim multiple medals across disciplines. In the 800 metres, Mayara dos Santos secured gold in 2:17.75, a top mark among women’s middle‑distance runners. Brazil also won team points through relay efforts and field events, strengthening its presence in the overall standings.
In the pentathlon, Brazilian Roberta Almeida dos Santos scored 4117 points a new championship record and a performance that places her among the top all‑time South American women in combined events.
Broader Women’s Results and Significance
The event’s full results show high calibre across women’s programme finals: the 400 metres winner clocked 53.73 seconds, while the 1500m and 3000m champions ran 4:30.18 and 10:11.76 respectively, underscoring depth in women’s distance running at the championship. Pole vault and triple jump finals also featured competitive fields, with winning clearances of 4.10m and 13.84m.
These results came at the only approved indoor athletics venue in South America, located at high altitude, which can influence performance marks.
What Comes Next
With several championship records falling in the women’s competition, athletes from the 2026 South American Indoor Championships may carry momentum into the 2026 World Indoor Championships and other international events later in the season. Continued strong showings by South American women in sprint, jump and hurdles disciplines position the region as increasingly competitive on the global stage.
