Temitope Adeshina Breaks Big 12 Indoor High Jump Record As Texas Tech Wins Conference Titles

Nigerian high jumper Temitope Adeshina set a new Big 12 Indoor Championship record, clearing 1.96m, as part of Big 12 Indoor Championships results and standings at the Sports Performance Center. Her performance helped Texas Tech University Athletics report – Red Raiders sweep Big 12 indoor titles secure back‑to‑back women’s conference crowns on 28 February 2026.

Adeshina’s mark exceeded the previous Big 12 meet best of 1.93m that had stood since 2009/2016, according to the official conference recap. Her leap also marked her third straight indoor Big 12 title, a feat unmatched since Rylee Anderson’s streak from 2021–2023.

Historic High Jump Performance

Adeshina’s clearance of 1.96m (6 ft 5 in) established a new championship record, as confirmed by the Big 12 Conference coverage. The Nigerian athlete, who finished tied for the NCAA Indoor high jump title in 2025 and holds a career personal best of 1.97m, maintained her dominance in the event. Her performance ranked among the best in NCAA Division I competition this season.

“She’s the reason behind the jump… I don’t want to lose to her,” Adeshina said, referencing collegiate rival Sharie Enoe, who cleared 1.93m at the meet.

According to Punch News Online, Adeshina secured her third consecutive Big 12 indoor high jump crown after clearing 1.96m, equalling the second-best mark in her school’s history. The clearance established a new meet record, surpassing the previous standard of 1.93m set by Akela Jones in 2016 and Destinee Hooker in 2009. In doing so, she became the first woman in Big 12 history to win three successive indoor high jump titles since Rylee Anderson achieved the feat between 2021 and 2023.

At the Big 12 Indoor Championships in Texas, Olayinka Olajide led a trio of Nigerian athletes in the women’s 200m, running a personal best of 23.21 seconds to secure a spot in the final. Her teammate Success Umukoro claimed victory in her heat with 23.23 seconds, while Success Oyibu clocked 23.51 seconds, just missing out on qualification. Meanwhile, Ella Onojuvwevwo kicked off her 400m campaign at the SEC Indoor Championships with a heat win, recording 51.79 seconds ahead of Tyra Cox and Lacarthea Cooper

Team Success and Championship Sweep

According to the Texas Tech athletics office, the Red Raiders clinched both men’s and women’s team titles at the 2026 Big 12 Indoor Championships, finishing with 114.5 points on the women’s side. BYU finished second with 110 points, followed by Oklahoma State.

The men’s team also secured the conference crown with 125 points, edging Kansas State by one point.

Supporting Performances

  • Tonie‑Ann Forbes claimed the women’s 60m hurdles title with a 7.91s run, setting a new school record.

  • Ruta Lasmane won the women’s triple jump with a 13.79m leap.

  • On the men’s side, Malachi Snow was crowned high‑point performer after wins in the 60m (6.46s) and 60m hurdles (7.43s).

Broader Conference Context

At the conclusion of day one, Kansas State led the women’s standings, with Adeshina’s record performance highlighted as a key result. Other Big 12 event winners included Mercyline Kirwa in the women’s 5000m and Juliette Laracuente‑Huebner in the pentathlon.

According to Punch News Online and Ademola Victor Tv, Ochonogor continued her dominance at the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) championships, successfully defending her women’s long jump title with a best mark of 6.29m. The sophomore now boasts three consecutive WAC long jump crowns, adding this year’s indoor title to the indoor and outdoor championships she secured last season.

Earlier this year, she achieved a 6.69m jump, the second-best in the NCAA this season and the all-time WAC record. She also showcased her sprinting ability, recording a personal best of 7.31s in the 60m to reach the final.

At the SEC Indoor Championships, Samuel Ogazi made a strong impression, winning his 400m heat in 45.30s in a tight battle with NCAA leader Jonathan Simms, who finished in 45.52s. Ogazi advanced as the fastest qualifier for the final. Esther Joseph also excelled, taking her 400m heat in 52.71s.

In Indianapolis at the Big Ten Indoor Championships, Emmanuel Njoku leaped 7.86m in the men’s long jump final to claim second place behind DJ Fillmore, who set a personal best of 8.23m.

Meanwhile, Kelly Ufodiama dominated the women’s sprints at the American Conference Indoor Championships in Birmingham, winning her 60m heat in 7.27s and posting a season-best 22.89s in the 200m, leading the field across 12 heats.
