Why Stoppage Time Matters
Stoppage time is the period added at the end of a half to account for time lost during play. The notation 90+1 means one minute beyond the usual 90 minutes.
A goal in that period counts just like any other. Here, it changed the result from a draw to a win. In league football, a win earns three points and a draw earns one, so a late winner can make a large difference.
A Different Story From the March Meeting
The teams had drawn 0–0 in their first meeting of the season in March. Before this return game, Gotham’s September 18 match preview described a contest between the league’s leading defence and leading attack.
Gotham had also just beaten Racing Louisville 2–1 away from home. Guro Reiten and Jaedyn Shaw scored in that match. Therefore, the trip to North Carolina offered a chance to build on another road victory.
This time, both teams found the net. The late finish settled a match that remained level after North Carolina’s equaliser.
Gotham Secures Another NWSL Playoff Place
In its September 20 playoff announcement, Gotham said it had extended the longest postseason streak in club history. The team has reached the playoffs in every season since 2023.
That run includes NWSL championship wins in 2023 and 2025. Now, the club has another chance to compete for the title.
Gotham also remains in the race for its first NWSL Shield. The Shield goes to the team that finishes top of the regular-season standings. The championship, by contrast, is decided through the playoffs. They are separate honours, so securing a playoff place does not mean winning either trophy.

Gotham is scheduled to host Chicago Stars FC at Sports Illustrated Stadium on Friday, September 25. The club lists kickoff at 8 p.m. Eastern Time, with US coverage on Prime Video.
Five regular-season games remained when Gotham announced its playoff place. That leaves further results to settle before the final postseason picture is clear.
