Zheng Qinwen recovered from a 5–0 first-set deficit to beat Iga Świątek 7–5, 6–3 at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York on Monday, 7 September, securing a place in the 2026 US Open quarter-finals. The Chinese qualifier won seven consecutive games to take the opening set before completing her fourth-round victory over the eighth seed, according to the tournament’s official match report.
Świątek established her five-game advantage in 23 minutes, but Zheng overturned it and later broke for a 4–3 lead in the second set. The result made Zheng the first woman to reach the tournament’s last eight from qualifying since Emma Raducanu won the title in 2021, the organisers said.
According to Spanish sports newspaper AS, the match lasted one hour and 56 minutes. Zheng won 13 of the final 16 games after losing the opening five.
The comeback followed another recovery against Madison Keys on Saturday. The US Open’s results round-up reported that Zheng had also trailed 5–0 in the deciding set of that third-round match before winning.
Zheng, the Paris 2024 Olympic women’s singles champion, missed last year’s US Open while recovering from right elbow surgery, according to the same round-up. She came through qualifying to enter this year’s main draw.
Speaking after Monday’s victory, Zheng said she gradually regained her rhythm and concentrated on individual points, according to the official match report. She also credited her team’s work for her progress.
Zheng is due to face Elena Rybakina in the quarter-finals on Wednesday, AS reported. Rybakina advanced by beating Naomi Osaka 6–1, 6–4 on Monday, according to the US Open.
