Red Roses Look to Respond After Canada Draw
England’s remarkable streak came to an end at Sandy Park in Exeter on 19 September. Canada held the world champions to a 26–26 draw, their first ever against the Red Roses, and closed out the game when Claire Gallagher kicked the ball into touch, RugbyPass reported.
The run had started in March 2023 and included England’s 2025 Rugby World Cup final win over Canada. Even so, head coach John Mitchell welcomed the test. “Canada were good. We were also good,” he said, as quoted by RugbyPass.
Captain Meg Jones called it “amazing Test match rugby”. However, she admitted that England’s discipline had let them down. Before that, the Red Roses opened their campaign with a 48–15 win over Australia on 12 September.
Black Ferns Unbeaten on Northern Tour
New Zealand arrive in strong form under head coach Whitney Hansen. They opened their WXV campaign with a 28–14 win over France in Lyon on 12 September, with tries from Justine McGregor, Mia Anderson, Mererangi Paul and Liana Mikaele-Tu’u, according to the official Black Ferns match report.
New captain Georgia Ponsonby described the defensive effort that night as the team’s best of 2026. The Black Ferns then thrashed Scotland 66–14 in Edinburgh, 1News reported. Evie Gallagher scored twice, while full-back Braxton Sorensen-McGee kicked seven conversions.
England vs New Zealand Head-to-Head Record
New Zealand still lead the overall series. The sides have met 33 times, with the Black Ferns winning 19, England 13 and one match drawn, according to historical match records.
However, recent meetings have belonged to England. The Red Roses have won the last four, most recently 49–31 at WXV 1 in October 2024. New Zealand’s last win came in the 2021 Rugby World Cup final, a 34–31 thriller played in November 2022.
