Lyon and Chelsea Draw 0–0 in Champions League as VAR Takes Centre Stage

OL Lyonnes and Chelsea drew 0–0 in the Women’s Champions League at Parc Olympique Lyonnais on Wednesday 30 September, after VAR overturned a penalty for Chelsea and ruled out a goal for Lyon. Chelsea goalkeeper Hannah Hampton made a key late save from Ada Hegerberg to secure the point, Just Women’s Sports reported. The Lyon Chelsea draw leaves Sonia Bompastor’s side on four points after two games of the new league phase.
VAR Decisions in Lyon Chelsea Clash
Chelsea thought they had a penalty when Lauren James went down in the box. However, VAR overturned the decision after a review found she had lost her footing, according to Just Women’s Sports.
Lyon then had the ball in the net through Salma Paralluelo in the 70th minute. Again, VAR stepped in and ruled the goal out for offside. As a result of the reviews, the referee added eight minutes of stoppage time.
Late on, Hampton dived to deny Hegerberg. She needed treatment after a collision with Tabitha Chawinga but was able to continue. In the end, neither side could find a winner despite the extended stoppage time.
Bompastor Proud of Clean Sheet

Chelsea’s head coach was pleased with her side’s defensive display. “I’m really proud of my team for not conceding here,” Bompastor said, as quoted by Just Women’s Sports.
Bompastor coached Lyon before joining Chelsea, which added extra interest to the meeting. Chelsea had opened their campaign with a 1–0 win over Austria Wien, while Lyon thrashed Servette 8–0, CBS Sports reported.
Chelsea’s Domestic Form
Chelsea’s league form has been strong either side of the trip to France. They beat Arsenal 1–0 at Stamford Bridge a few days before the Lyon game, and then won 3–0 at West Ham afterwards. As a result, they sit second in the WSL table, two points behind Manchester City, after five games.
