London City Lionesses Thrash Tottenham 6–1 as Alexia Putellas Scores Twice

London City Lionesses thrashed Tottenham Hotspur 6–1 in the Women’s Super League on Sunday 4 October, with summer signings Alexia Putellas and Kadidiatou Diani both scoring twice. The result ended Tottenham’s unbeaten start to the season, Just Women’s Sports reported. The London City Lionesses win also lifted them into the top three, one point behind second-placed Chelsea.
Chelsea beat West Ham 3–0 on the same day, while Manchester City stayed top with a 4–2 win over Arsenal. Everton and Brighton also picked up victories.
How London City Lionesses Beat Tottenham
Putellas opened the scoring inside the first few minutes after a Tottenham giveaway, and London City pressed high throughout the first half, Yahoo Sports reported. Diani and Putellas then added further goals before half-time.
London City struck again early in the second half, while Victoria Pelova replied for Spurs. Diani completed her double in the second half, and Delphine Cascarino added a sixth in stoppage time, according to Sky Sports.
Tottenham manager Martin Ho was unhappy with his side’s display. He said they “looked scared with the ball” and described the performance as “not acceptable”, as quoted by Just Women’s Sports.

Putellas, a two-time Ballon d’Or winner, joined London City this summer. She arrived in a major transfer window that also brought Diani and Mapi León to the club, Just Women’s Sports reported.
