Spain Beat USWNT 2–0 in Washington as World Champions Strike Early
World champions Spain beat the United States 2–0 in a friendly at Audi Field in Washington DC on Saturday 10 October, with both goals coming in the first 14 minutes. Patricia Guijarro scored in the third minute and Eva Navarro added a second, US Soccer confirmed. The Spain USWNT clash drew a sell-out crowd of 19,220.
The two sides meet again in Chester, Pennsylvania, on Tuesday 13 October.
How Spain Beat the USWNT
Spain struck almost immediately. Guijarro fired in from long range after a pass from Edna Imade, and Navarro then finished a cross from Salma Paralluelo, Bleacher Report reported.
The United States responded well and finished with 12 shots, nine of them on target. However, Sophia Wilson had a goal ruled out for offside after a VAR review in the 53rd minute.
The hosts also missed a penalty. Lily Yohannes, 19, saw her spot-kick saved by Adriana Nanclares after Mallory Swanson was fouled in the box. Spain finished with 10 players after Athenea del Castillo was sent off in stoppage time.
What the Spain USWNT Result Means

The match was a meeting of the world’s top two ranked teams, with Spain first. Spain have now lost only once in their last 21 matches, a defeat to England in April, Bleacher Report noted.
By contrast, the United States have won three and lost three of their last six games, including defeats to Spain, Brazil and Japan. It is rare for a team under Emma Hayes to trail by more than one goal.
Spain are the defending world champions and have already qualified for the 2027 World Cup in Brazil. The USA, four-time winners, still need to qualify through the Concacaf W Championship in November. Read more in our Women’s World Cup 2027 guide.
